Left to right – Golden Eagle (Northern Hemisphere), Bald Eagle (North America),
Wedge Tailed Eagle (Australia)
A wounded eagle perched on high,
The mighty fallen from the sky.
Beneath the jackals congregate
For they foresee the eagle’s fate.
But jackals are a craven crowd
Whilst eagles are a tribe that’s proud.
While jackals scheme and lie and gloat
They’ll soon be at each other’s throat.
The eagle’s wounds will slowly heal,
His wrath the jackals then will feel
As jackals cower in their bands
And eagles fly from other lands.

The jackals of the world will always be waiting for the mighty to fall, but those of character will always win. Good poem!

There are two types of people who rise to prominence (and notoriety). The ones who create and the ones who disparage. One comes up through their own talent and the other comes up by stepping everyone down – the eagle and the jackal.

I like this very much, Dennis. And (being a minister anyway), I’m reminded strongly of what the Word of God says about the believer soaring on wings as an eagle. All the hosts of the enemy do their best to get us to fall and fail — and barring that, they try to get us to give up. But if we will just make the attitude of the eagle (as you portray him here) our default attitude, the enemy forces with eventually tear each other apart, and we will renew our strength and soar away. Thanks for providing the lens to focus on this truth.

The metaphors within this, Dennis, is traditional and easy to understand, both eagle metaphor and the jackal, and thus it stirs something deep in every reader’s soul and spirit. I enjoyed this a lot.
