Profit and Loss

poem, poetry, profit, Russell Brand

(For that nong Russell Brand (who apparently hasn’t heard of the Soviet Union and most certainly hasn’t read “The Gulag Archipelago”) – and who I’m sure makes massive profits himself)

Let’s think about what profit is
Before we get into a tizz.
For profit’s now a dirty word,
So loss is good? – No! that’s absurd.
A profit is what has been made
When all expenses have been paid.
From ripened harvest that you reap –
The precious grain you get to keep.
The cash that goes into your bank
For that, it’s profit you must thank.
For profit funds our way of life,
While hand in hand with loss comes strife.
But when one makes a healthy gain
From critics comes a loud refrain
Of: “Profiteers!” and “Rogues!” and “Greed!”
And all the media take heed,
But when the news is of a loss
Then all are quiet – none gives a toss.
Yet profits small mean times are bad
While profits large make sane men glad,
For surplus can be put in store
For those lean years when gains are poor.
Remember that the food you eat,
Your clothes, the shoes upon your feet,
Your shelter and the car you drive
And all that’s needed to survive,
From profits made come all these things,
While loss – but misery it brings.

So Russell’s a socialist is he?

Mayor Clover has money to burn,
And post modernist sculptors must earn;
She says: “Make it wavy,
I’ll dish out the gravy.”
Don’t look, or your stomach may churn.

I’ve never laughed so much – I almost cried.
This standout, standup mistress of the arts
Tells jokes about her privates and her farts.
Upon such clever wit the film relied.
It helped to cover up the darker side;
What was it now? – was it….infanticide?
I can’t remember all those little parts;
From memory something or someone died.

In any case ‘twas fun – no one was hurt;
Well – all except the one mentioned before,
And there was not a hint of blood and gore;
The humour never rose above the dirt,
And yet the unintended theme was clear:
We joke about the things we truly fear.

When someone is firing at you,
You tend to fire back – that is true.
Should their firing cease
It will restore the peace,
That’s all firing fools have to do.

Hamas has been playing its games
And Gaza again is in flames;
The Jews are returning
And bodies are burning
And everyone’s calling them names.

There’s a new form of work for the dole,
And it’s working quite well on the whole.
It’s as good as it sounds
For we’ll pay for your rounds
While the devil may pray for your soul.

poem, poetry

I’m pretty near out of my tree
For nothing rhymes with poetry.
I’m sending out an urgent plea,
I’m getting down upon one knee,
Does anyone, a he or she
Know words that rhyme with poetry?
I normally rhyme to a T,
But rhyme this time I cannot see.
I’ve given up, oh woe is me,
How could this ending come to be?
I blow a fuse, I scream and curse,
I quite refuse to write free verse!

Two transgender mates shared a bed,
But decided to swap head for head.
Now they say it went great,
Both are feeling quite straight,
But their former gay buddies have fled.

If The Prophet you’re meaning to mock,
Then beware of his radical flock.
Fundamentalist folk
Tend to not see the joke,
And your head they are liable to dock.
