An artist paints upon a canvas white,
Whilst nature paints a canvas black – with light.
The faintest glow, a hint of coming dawn,
Then vague outlines upon the scene are drawn,
And colour slowly through the picture seeps
As from its rest the waking sunlight creeps,
Until with one last stroke the picture’s done;
A masterpiece to show the day’s begun.
