The Bird

A man in the forest had lost his way;
A rich man seldom inclined to roam,
When a bird flew down near the end of day
And the bird cried out: “I will lead you home!”

Said the man to the bird: “Why do you, help me?
And by doing this, what do you gain?”
And replied the bird: “There will be no fee
For my only wish is to ease your pain.

For I see you lost as are many more,
If you follow me I will tell you why,
For though you are rich and a bird is poor
We will both have nothing the day we die.”

Said the bird: “I own neither land nor sky
Whilst you are rich in the worldly things
But whither I wish I there do fly
While lust for money has clipped your wings.

For the more you own then the more you fret
And until you cast to the wind these things,
While you covert more, and while more you get,
You will have but the sorrow that worry brings.”

And as he followed the fluttering bird
Through gloomy forest where seemed no end,
He saw the truth of his saviour’s word
And he knew in his heart, his ways he’d mend.

Then the forest opened to sunlit field
And there in the distance a welcome sight,
For there was the road to home revealed
To the man who surely had seen the light.

But now delivered and safe and sound
The rich man pondered the things he’d heard.
He wondered whether the truth he’d found
For on reflection perhaps he’d erred.

Now out of danger his course was clear
And he said to the bird: “You are wise and kind,
My thanks, but to lose all my wealth I fear
For I value gold over peace of mind.”

Cut carbon! our network’s demanding,
For the earth as it heats is expanding;
Listen up, stop that snigger,
We are getting bigger,
You need to be more understanding

Of the dangers that this trend is showing;
We’re a much bigger target and growing;
We’ll ignore your derision,
There’ll be a collision,
For fast are the meteors going.

Yes the world is now bloated and fatted,
And the gas we emitted, it mattered;
It’s a scientific link,
Cut the gas, then we’ll shrink,
Or by meteors we will be shattered.

How dumb are the presenters at CNN?

This warming is asphyxiating;
Their hearts are no longer vibrating;
With their batteries dead
And electrons all fled,
They’re no longer, their mistresses sating.

What happened to the villain who’s just bad?
The crook who is corrupt right to the core.
Bad – whether his upbringing rich or poor.
Turns out he was mistreated when a lad,
And underprivileged – had a nasty dad,
So Hollywood must now his past explore,
Excuse his disregard for life and law,
And paint him as a victim – wronged and sad.
I think more likely it’s an evil gene,
(If so then it is doubtful they are rare)
That makes a creature menacing and mean,
Devoid of sorrow, empathy or care;
A microscopic cellular defect,
Hard wired, not learned – the cause of the effect.

Unless you have been involved with Irish Dancing
competitions you may not understand this……..

You know, I’m really quite a fan
Of Irish dancing Taliban.
Under a blazing desert sun
These turbaned chaps are having fun.
You’ll see them dancing on the road
(And here and there a few explode)
And as the craze o’er deserts rages
Everywhere rise up the stages –
Competitions are the go
For martyrs who are in the know.
The judges all sit in a row
Completely covered head to toe,
With blindfolds, so that they can’t see
A flash of ankle, calf or knee.

And first up is the soft shoe round:
Like tents with feet they leap and bound,
With one two threes and rocks and twirls.
(They’re all pretending to be girls)
They’re dancing reels or strange mazurkas,
(Who can tell beneath those burkas?)
And who will win is never clear
With judges judging just by ear,
But when the hard shoe dance is done
With tapping like a machine gun;
The battering of Afghan feet,
Just like that old ballistic beat,
Then it’s not hard to pick the best
And sort the camels from the rest:
With that percussive rattling sound
The judges really nail that round.

My name’s Jock and I’d like to say Hi!
In the wind does my skirt tend to fly.
And I’m rather well built
Neath my high flying kilt,
As for knickers – those I’ll never buy.

ISIS, limerick, poem, poetry

No, it’s not about money or oil,
Or liberty, justice or soil;
It’s about the sick thrill
Of an infidel kill;
It’s the pus from the lance of a boil.

Australian traditional poetry, Dead Sea Scrolls, poem, poetry

Above the Dead Sea’s bitter waves
Like hollowed eyes, the hills have caves,
And there a man all robed in white
Wraps manuscripts in linen, tight,
And seals them up with pitch and wax
And places them in jars, and stacks
Them safely in the rough-hewn vault
That gazes on the sea of salt.

So pass by centuries – a score,
Of seldom peace and often war.
The treasures languish in their lair;
Some crumble in the desert air.
A herd boy passing by alone
Into the cave’s mouth throws a stone.
Two thousand years their secrets sealed;
A shattered jar – the scrolls revealed.

Fundamentalism, Iraq war, islam, poem, poetry

What are we to do with Islam?
A question to ask Uncle Sam.
It seems he ignores
The cause of these wars;
The faith, he’s reluctant to damn.

Now Baghdad is back in the news;
Seems likely that our side will lose,
And all of those lives,
Lone children and wives,
Will ask – why did they pay our dues?

Some nations are born without hope.
Should you think otherwise you’re a dope.
When your faith harbours war,
(That’s Jihad) at its core,
Will it ever advance?
Not a ghost of a chance,
So the answer is quite clearly: Nope.
