No, his martyrdom didn’t go well.
From the living to Hades he fell.
Now he had time to burn,
So for pleasure he’d yearn –
But there weren’t any virgins in hell.

Oooooooh, that’s hitting them where it hurts!
You are so CREATIVELY politically incorrect. That’s one of the reasons I’m giving the link to your site to my students in the Writing Poetry class I’m teaching this term. The junior college I teach for has never offered this subject in their continuing education department before, and my students are really excited — even though there finding out it’s hard work. I’ve explained that anyone and his brother can write “free verse” and call it poetry, but it takes someone with a little talent and a lot of commitment to excellence to work at putting their ideas into meter and rhyme. They are learning to do that, and I’m working on trying to help them see that any subject at all can be made effective in a form of poetry. So I’m recommending your site to them, as well as Dennis Lange’s. As you’re aware, he’s another modern poet who has not sacrificed his work on the altar of the condescending, hoity-toity “free verse” addicts.
I should probably add that I have nothing against an occasional poem written in free verse. I have even done a couple. But when that’s all anyone can write — or all they think is worthy to be published — there’s a problem.
I’ve been away for a while Sandra (in Hawaii amongst other places would you believe) Thanks for the comments and honoured to have my site recommended for your students – just hope they can withstand the odd shock and have a sense of humour. 😉
