When ends this journey to infinity,
The galaxies, each planet and each sun,
Will cease their flight so long ago begun
And one by one will yield to gravity,
As then the earth, the land, the air, the sea
(As falls from high the bullet from a gun,
So backwards does the time and matter run)
Will hurtle to a singularity.
Where to a point the elements compress.
Explode again in fierce and fiery foam.
Another chapter in the endless tome,
As on the planet that the gods so bless
The creatures rise again from sea and loam,
And idle poets idle thoughts express.
Really nicely done Dennis….”And idle poets idle thoughts express”…love this line ๐
Nice poem. Reminds me though how many so-called “Singularities” they seem to come across in Star Trek. Seeems to be a lot. i wonder what the collective noun for a group of “Singularities” would be. An “impossibility of singularities” perhaps?
A plurality of singularities?
Excellent sonnet! I, too, like the last line. I do have a scientific bone to pick, however, with whoever thought up the theory of the oscillating universe. ๐
I agree it’s a pretty shaky theory ๐ – but a good subject for a poem
Kinda hope the theory is at least 3,000,000,000 light years away from happening.
Such thoughts are way above my pay grade but isn’t infinity forever?…
I don’t think we need to worry Lindy Lee.
Well, of course, you know I can’t agree with this premise theologically, but you’ve written a great poem here, as usual, Dennis.
I dare say that will be the case with some of my future poems as well Sandra but I’m not actually pushing this theory, which has kind of fallen out of favour anyway.
I understand. It makes for good poetry.
